MFT Agents: Definition, Differences and Use Cases

In GoAnywhere’s latest product release of its Managed File Transfer solution, MFT agent capabilities were introduced. The following resource aims to help readers understand what MFT agents are, the difference between a traditional MFT deployment and an MFT agent deployment and some example use cases. For further questions, open the Live Chat box at the bottom right of this page or send us an email at linoma.sales@helpsystems.com.

What are MFT Agents?

MFT agents provide real-time, remote file transfer capabilities that are controlled from a central MFT server. Managed File Transfer Agents are ideal for organizations with remote sites like branch offices, cloud environments or other remote locations, where remote management of data movement from a single flagship location is required.

With GoAnywhere MFT agents, IT admins can:

  • Enjoy centralized control of remote file transfers and workflows
  • Create Agent Templates with registration rules to easily deploy Agents on a large scale
  • Monitor remote locations for new, modified and deleted files on the system

MFT Agents vs. Traditional MFT

There are a few key differences between traditional MFT deployments and an MFT Agent deployment. By deploying agents, network professionals can manage all instances of the deployment from one centralized location, versus having to manage multiple locations individually. This drastically reduces the amount of configuration time, and can present major cost benefits considering the reduction in administration time, management of software updates and other tasks.

MFT agent capability allows IT professionals to easily deploy MFT agents on almost any server or workstation where file transfers need to be performed (Windows, VMware, Linux, Amazon EC2, Microsoft Azure, IBM I (iSeries), AIX, UNIX, and Mac OS systems). With this multi-platform capability, organizations with complex environments can greatly reduce the manual, repeatable work associated with the complexity.

MFT Agent Applications & Use Cases

In an interview with Linoma Software President and Chief Architect, Bob Luebbe, the wide application of MFT agents is explained. “The use cases for MFT agents are really endless. Whether it’s a franchise needing to synchronize files with its store locations, or a healthcare system needing to move PHI data between its data center and satellite clinics, the deployment of MFT agents will greatly simplify those processes,” he says.

Below are just a few use cases of Managed File Transfer agents:

  • Restaurant Franchises: Whether a restaurant chain has thousands of locations worldwide, or a handful of regional locations, MFT agents allow for the distribution of new proprietary recipes, pricing updates and other sensitive data to and from the remote locations - easily and securely.
  • Retail Stores: Retail organizations with a network of stores can now manage new season inventory updates, product launch information, changes to employee policies and more, all through one centralized solution.
  • Healthcare Providers: Healthcare clinics with multiple satellite locations can ensure PHI data is securely transferred between locations, pharmacies and other partners using MFT agents.
  • Insurance Agencies: Enrollment applications, new products and services, and pricing structure updates can all be transferred quickly and securely.

In any use case, MFT agents can run on systems inside an organization’s network to move files throughout the data center, or can be deployed to remote sites like branch offices, cloud environments like Amazon AWS, Azure, and other remote locations. GoAnywhere MFT Agents even allow users to create and schedule multi-step workflows that can copy files, archive files, translate data, send alerts, add data to a database, execute native commands, or perform other file system tasks.

The image below shows an example implementation model, where one agent is deployed to an internal network, two are deployed to remote locations and one is deployed to a cloud environment.

Imagine the possibilities if organizations could greatly reduce the time spent on manual file transfer processes, and reallocate those resources towards more strategic initiatives.

New Version of GoAnywhere Managed File Transfer Improves Application Integration and API Support

Linoma Software has extended GoAnywhere Managed File Transfer’s workflow automation and file transfer features to include SOAP and RESTful Web Services. Combined with new JSON Read & Write tasks, GoAnywhere MFT 5.4 provides better integration with Web Services and other applications for securely transferring data and automating processes.

“Organizations are looking for ways to automate data transfers and integrate systems using cloud-based or internal API’s” says Steve Luebbe, Linoma’s Director of Engineering.  “They also want an easy way to process the XML and JSON formatted data that is returned from the server which are some of the new features we incorporated into GoAnywhere MFT 5.4.”

To provide a fully integrated SOAP and REST solution, a number of new tasks, resources, and workflow features were added including:

  • A REST resource and new tasks to interact with RESTful Web Services. These tasks support XML and JSON based services.
  • A SOAP resource and task to provide streamlined integration with SOAP web services. A wizard is provided to simplify creation of actions by building them based on the WSDL definition. Files can be sent inline or using MTOM. The files and XML payload returned from the web service can then be stored or processed.
  • Tasks to read and write JSON data.

In addition to Workflow enhancements, both Secure Forms and GoAnywhere Command have been updated to integrate with Web Services. Secure Forms can now be submitted using SOAP requests, offering an ideal solution for users to build custom applications that submit data and files to GoAnywhere.  GoAnywhere’s API interface supports both REST and SOAP requests to automate GoAnywhere Workflows and User provisioning through existing applications.

Significant Time Savings

The new Web Services integration delivers significant time savings for GoAnywhere users. In just a few steps, users can take advantage of Web Services standardization to quickly connect applications and share data across a diverse range of systems and platforms. The entire process can be completed with just a few clicks and requires no programming knowledge.

Continuing Advancements with GoAnywhere Automation & Security

Current GoAnywhere MFT customers who upgrade to the new release also gain functionality for workflow automation and user authentication. New feature highlights include:

Custom Online Forms Made Simple and Secure with Latest Linoma Software Product Update

Linoma Software builds on the security and automation capabilities of GoAnywhere Managed File Transfer with the introduction of Secure Forms in the latest release, version 5.3.

Secure Forms

Secure Forms allows administrators to quickly and easily build custom forms, with optional file upload capabilities, that can automatically process submitted data and files. Access to Secure Forms is made available through a secure HTTPS Web Client, which can be configured for access by authorized users and/or anonymous users.

GoAnywhere Secure FormsAny files uploaded through a Secure Form are automatically encrypted at rest, and submissions are logged in GoAnywhere to provide Administrators an end-to-end audit trail. Registered users can save forms as drafts to revisit at a later date, or view their submitted forms at any time.

"As an example, Secure Forms will be used in the upcoming presidential election to collect ballots from military personnel and overseas voters," says Bob Luebbe, president of Linoma. "The voter can go to a web address provided by the state, then choose the county where they have permanent residence and upload their ballot. With the GoAnywhere workflow engine, the ballots will be automatically distributed to the local county commissioners over encrypted connections."

Secure Forms is offered as an optional licensed module for GoAnywhere MFT.  Please visit the Secure Forms page for additional details.

New Tasks and Enhanced Features

Accelerated File Transfer and Security Domains in Latest Release of GoAnywhere MFT

Linoma Software announces two significant enhancements in Version 5.2 of the award winning GoAnywhere Managed File Transfer software.  A new file transfer acceleration protocol called GoFast improves delivery speed and reliability when compared to traditional FTP, and Domains allows organizations to segregate users and workflows to provide an additional layer of data security.

GoFast Accelerated File TransferThe new GoFast protocol uses multiple UDP channels to accelerate the movement of files between servers. This acceleration is especially useful for moving large files, including videos and backup sets, across the internet or wide area networks (WANs). Options are provided in GoFast to protect confidential transfers with strong AES-256 encryption, as well as compress transmissions to minimize bandwidth requirements. Since GoFast is a feature within the GoAnywhere Managed File Transfer solution, it takes full advantage of the available automation, auditing and reporting capabilities in the product.

Domains can be used to segregate GoAnywhere MFT into multiple security zones where authorized users can only work with trading partners, workflows and logs belonging to their assigned domains.  This functionality benefits organizations that need to share a single installation of GoAnywhere with multiple divisions or departments, while maintaining separation of administrative access. Each domain can be locked into certain network folders to prevent unauthorized access by other administrators.

Continuing Advancements with GoAnywhere Automation & Security

Current GoAnywhere MFT customers that upgrade to the current release also gain new functionality for workflow automation and user authentication. Highlights for some of the new features include:

  • Support for Amazon S3 Buckets and WebDAV resources that can be used as file storage for trading partners and workflows.
  • Support for popular SMS gateways and SMNP servers to make it easier to automate alerts and notifications.
  • Project revision history tracking that allows you to restore workflows to previous versions.
  • RSA RADIUS Login methods with Two-Factor-Authentication using key fobs or token apps.
  • Additional logs and change history to track administrator user activity on the system.

Single Sign-On Improves User Experience and Security in GoAnywhere Services 3.5 Release

Omaha, NE - May 14, 2014

goanywhere services 3.5 logoLinoma Software is proud to announce the addition of SSO (Single Sign-On) support in its secure FTP server software, GoAnywhere Services, with the release of version 3.5. The new feature is specifically designed to simplify the user experience without sacrificing security.  Additional enhancements include two new languages, custom disclaimers for all languages and new Virtual Folder commands.

Single Sign-On

GoAnywhere Services now offers improved security and simplicity with Single Sign-On support for the HTTPS Web Client.

Workers use a growing number of usernames and passwords each day to access their company's network portal, webmail, benefits system, cloud-based applications, and much more.  This can lead to "weak" passwords or the overuse of a single password which, if stolen, can create vulnerability across multiple accounts.

Implementing SSO provides time and cost savings for a company.  The addition of SAML v2.0 support, using the OpenSAML API, allows GoAnywhere Services to improve productivity, increase adoption, centralize user access control and add a uniform security layer.  SSO support now allows integration of GoAnywhere Services with both internal applications and compatible external applications, such as Salesforce.com.

SAML (Security Assertion Mark-Up Language) is an XML based open standard for authorization and authentication between an Identity Provider and a Service Provider.

"We felt this feature was the next logical evolution from the LDAP integration offered in version 3.4 of GoAnywhere Services", said Steve Luebbe, Lead Software Engineer for GoAnywhere.

Expanded Language Support

Version 3.5 adds support for two new languages: Portuguese and Bahasa.  This enhancement is in direct response to feedback from our customers who do business globally.  Linoma Software continues to evaluate requests for additional languages as part of our commitment to building a product that serves an international marketplace.

This release also improves language support by accommodating custom disclaimers for each language.

Virtual Folder Commands

GACMD (GoAnywhere Command) received an update that improves the ability to create, update, and delete virtual files and folders across a range of web user and group profiles in GoAnywhere Services.  GACMD provides a way to programmatically send commands to GoAnywhere Services and our file automation solution; GoAnywhere Director.

A result of user feedback, this enhancement further improves the efficiency of GoAnywhere Services.
