Whether you’re considering a public cloud deployment or already exist in some form of hybrid environment, you’re probably trying to keep a pulse on the ever-evolving topic of cloud security. Data breaches and security incidents are constantly in the news these days, and for good reason: as our reliance on cloud technology grows, so does the quality and success of attempted cyberattacks—and our need for better cybersecurity practices.
According to a recent HelpSystems survey, nearly 70% of organizations have some portion of their core computing infrastructure in a third-party cloud. This move can be beneficial, but unfortunately, it can also be risky.
As a result of rapid cloud adoption, IT and cybersecurity teams are struggling to implement security practices in the cloud, like secure file transfers, identity and access management, and security controls, that will help them defend their data against potential cyberthreats. Only one in two organizations believe they’d "be able to resist cyber threats in their cloud infrastructure and applications" (Cybersecurity Trends 2017 Spotlight Report).

We’ve also seen confusion around who’s in charge of protecting cloud data once it leaves an organization’s internal network. Some think third-party cloud vendors are responsible for implementing and enforcing security policies, but they’re not. "Through 2022," Gartner predicts in this article, "at least 95% of cloud security failures will be the customer’s fault." Our suggestion? Read the fine print before working with a cloud vendor. The security and integrity of your data will often fall on you, the organization, so prepare to take ownership to prevent cloud security risks.
Forty-nine percent of surveyed organizations believe public cloud environments have a "higher risk of security breaches compared to on-premises."

In spring 2018, we sponsored an exciting cloud security research project spearheaded by Cybersecurity Insiders. They surveyed over 400,000 members in the LinkedIn Information Security Community to determine what IT and cybersecurity users think of this year’s cloud challenges, opportunities, and concerns.
If you aren’t sure what the latest cloud security trends are or how to respond to industry-wide cyberthreats and strategies, why not check in with your peers? The results of the research project, a 30-page report on cloud security, is just what you need to get up to speed.
Cybersecurity Insiders organized their cloud security report into six findings and dozens of surprising insights, like which security technologies and best practices are most effective. Use this information to prepare your organization for a successful year in your chosen public cloud environment.
