What is Open PGP?

Text

Open PGP is an encryption standard. It uses asymmetric (public key) cryptography and addresses issues around authentication of data and non-repudiation through the ability to "sign" files via embedded digital signatures.

These features deliver a high level of data protection to organizations, making PGP a popular encryption method.

GoAnywhere MFTaaS

Text

GoAnywhere MFTaaS is a cloud-managed file transfer solution. Just like the on-premises deployment of GoAnywhere MFT, the solution streamlines, secures, and automates the exchange of data between systems, employees, customers, and trading partners.

The MFTaaS option removes the uncertainty of managing cloud infrastructure on your own and does not require any on-premises software installation or maintenance. GoAnywhere MFTaaS handles all setup, hosting, and management – all you need to do is log in and start securely transferring your business-critical files.

Frequently Asked Questions

PGP in software refers to applications that use the OpenPGP standard to encrypt, decrypt, sign, and verify files or messages. These tools help protect sensitive data and ensure its integrity during transfer or storage.

Several tools implement OpenPGP, but GoAnywhere Open PGP Studio is one of the most widely used free PGP software options for encrypting and managing files across multiple operating systems.

Yes. PGP remains a trusted and widely adopted encryption method for securing files and ensuring data authenticity, especially in organizations that require strong compliance and data protection measures.

Yes. Many implementations of OpenPGP — including GoAnywhere Open PGP Studio — are available as free PGP software that allows users to encrypt, decrypt, sign, and verify files at no cost.

PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) encryption works through a hybrid cryptographic process that combines the speed of symmetric encryption with the security of asymmetric (public-key) encryption. Here is how it works

  1. Session Key Generation: When you encrypt a message or file, PGP first creates a random one-time session key. This key is used for fast symmetric encryption of the data.
  2. Session Key Encryption: To securely share this session key, PGP encrypts it using the recipient’s public key (asymmetric encryption).
  3. Transmission: The encrypted message and the encrypted session key are sent together.
  4. Decryption: The recipient uses their private key to decrypt the session key, then uses that session key to decrypt the message or file.

This approach ensures end-to-end security by combining efficiency with strong protection. PGP also supports digital signatures for authentication and integrity, verifying that the message hasn’t been altered and confirming the sender’s identity.

To decrypt a PGP-encrypted file, you first need the private key that matches the public key used for encryption and, if applicable, its passphrase. Here’s a step-by-step process:

Steps to Decrypt a PGP File
  1. Ensure You Have the Correct Private Key
The file must have been encrypted with your public key. Import your private key into your PGP tool or key vault.
  2. Use a PGP Tool or Command Line
    1. Command Line (GnuPG):

      1 gpg --output decrypted_file.txt --decrypt encrypted_file.pgp

This command decrypts encrypted_file.txt.pgp and saves the output as decrypted_file.txt.

    2. GoAnywhere/Open PGP Studio:
Add a PGP Decrypt task in your workflow or use the “Decrypt & Verify” option in Open PGP Studio. Select your private key from the key vault, enter the passphrase, and specify input/output file locations.
  3. Verify the Signature (Optional)
Most tools automatically check the digital signature during decryption to confirm authenticity.
  4. Troubleshooting Tips

    1. If prompted for a passphrase, ensure it is correct.
    2. Confirm the file format is .pgp or .gpg.
    3. If decryption fails, check that the private key matches the encryption key.

Pro Tip: For enterprise environments, Managed File Transfer (MFT) solutions like GoAnywhere MFT can automate PGP encryption/decryption, manage keys securely, and provide audit logs for compliance.
